Kiluanji Kia Henda | I Wanted to Create a Trap

Kiluanji was in his twenties when the Angolan civil war ended in 2002. Much inspired by his country’s history, Kiluanji’s images focus on the universal aspects of the human condition and aim to find common factors between various points on the planet. Talking about Angolan history is talking about Brazil, America, Europe…’, the artists says. Through his photography, video and performance, Henda documents his country’s history in an inventive and imaginary manner blending fiction and reality. The Angolan artist often uses humour to tackle themes of identity, politics and post-colonialism in Africa. ‘Humour is a way to put the finger on the wound. It’s a delicate way to deal with traumatic experiences’, he says.
