Basquiat: Through the Eyes of a Friend
On the occasion of Sotheby’s upcoming sale of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s extraordinary Untitled, 1982, filmmaker Tamra Davis reflects on her friendship with the artist – from their first meeting at the beginning of his career, to the many hours she spent with him in his studio, filming him as he worked. She recalls Basquiat’s love of music, his insatiable curiosity and his unshakeable belief in his own prodigious talent. Twenty years after Basquiat’s death, Davis unearthed her footage and directed Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child – a definitive work that provides rare and moving insight into one of the most important artists of our time. Untitled, 1982 leads Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening sale on 18 May in New York.
