Goetz | Lejardin Jolof
From the bodies of Lejardinjolof, the photographed bodies, evident, from the voice-body to the bodies eaten, told by cannibalism, an echo appears from a darkness, from a country, from a dark realm. I think it is even the right title for his works, to arrive at further ambiguities. JJ continues in an idea of photography, perfectly ambiguous, which builds mechanisms of feelings with an even more decisive rigor, and despite this, always with perfect ambiguity. Because in the end we know that the image, too much, cannot communicate as knowledge. And above all, more serious and stronger, we, much more than that, cannot read about this image.
And so JJ invents bare images and, despite this, excess. And anyway bodies, the body he is obsessed with, the severed bodies, often evoked in his immanent portfolio. His masks are hypnotic, his animals are at the service of a timeless story, his colors attract as much as they repel the viewer that he can only intuit, never understand. It is history that repeats itself, it is an immutable tradition, it is a renewed, inspired, yet always available to those who know how to interpret it because they have it.
JJ possesses these sharp tools, these false roundness, elevates them to a different feeling, brings them to us until we can feel them, yet he declares the impossibility of being part of them. We will never know if his bodies are being looked at by someone, what happened to him, what happens after each shot, what was before each shot, if they come from the present. We can only stand by and watch. Good vision.
