Mark Rothko, nato nel 1903 a Daugavpils, in Lettonia, e scomparso nel 1970 a New York, negli Stati Uniti d’America, è uno degli artisti più celebri della sua generazione, pioniere dell’espressionismo astratto e della pittura a colori. Le sue opere sono caratterizzate da un approccio radicale verso gli elementi formali della pittura – si pensi al colore, alla forma, alla composizione e alla scala – producendo tableau affascinanti, il più delle volte di grandi dimensioni, che compongono forme rettangolari allineate verticalmente di grandi piani di colore. Rothko sovrappone queste forme, creando fasce orizzontali in cui i colori adiacenti tremano, vibrano e sembrano persino emanare luce. Queste opere astratte radicali sembrano essere permeate dalla presenza di un’alta verità filosofica. Un carattere spirituale risiede sotto le pennellate.
